Recipe for Tennessee Onions
Components:
- Two to three large sweet onions, any kind would do, such as Vidalia
- One cup of mozzarella cheese, shredded
- One cup of cheddar cheese, shredded
- One stick of butter (½ cup)
- Grated Parmesan cheese, one cup
- One teaspoon of powdered garlic
- One-third teaspoon of black pepper
- Half a teaspoon of salt
- One-half teaspoon of optional dried thyme
- 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh parsley (for garnish)
- Two tablespoons of breadcrumbs (for added crunch, if desired)
Guidelines:
- Set the oven’s temperature to 175°C/350°F.
- Cut the onions into thick rings, about ¼ inch thick, and then slice each onion into a separate ring.
- Grease any ovenproof casserole dish, or a 9 x 13-inch baking dish.
- Arrange the onion rings in the baking dish in equal layers. Ensure that they are slightly overlapping but yet widely spaced.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. After melting, distribute the butter equally across the onions.
- Garlic powder, black pepper, salt, and thyme (if used) are used to season the onions.
- Evenly scatter the Parmesan, Cheddar, and mozzarella cheeses on top of the onions. Additionally, you can add breadcrumbs for an added crunch.
- Bake, uncovered, for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbling and brown and the onions are soft.
- Serve warm, garnished with fresh parsley.
- This dish is flavorful, creamy, and cheesy. It’s the ideal cozy side dish for any Southern-inspired meal, including holiday dinners and cookouts!
