- One sizable head of green cabbage
- 1 pound (450 grams) ground beef (or beef and pork combined)
- Half a cup of raw rice, long grain or basmati
- One little onion, chopped finely
- two minced cloves of garlic
- One egg
- One tablespoon of freshly chopped parsley (optional)
- One tsp of paprika
- One tsp salt
- half a teaspoon of pepper, black
Regarding the Tomato Sauce:
- One 15-oz can of tomato sauce
- One 14.5-oz can of chopped tomatoes
- One spoonful of pasted tomatoes
- One spoonful of sugar
- One tsp of Worcestershire sauce
- One tsp of dried basil, or Italian spice,
- Half a teaspoon of salt
- 1/4 tsp pepper
- one cup of water or beef broth
Guidelines:
Get the cabbage ready:
- Heat up a big saucepan of water until it boils. Peel off 12 to 15 of the outer cabbage leaves carefully. Blanch the cabbage leaves in the boiling water for 2-3 minutes until they are soft and pliable. Take them out and pat dry with a paper towel. Put aside to cool.
Prepare the rice:
- Cook the rice in a small saucepan as directed on the package. After cooking, remove and allow it cool somewhat.
Prepare the Filling:
- Ground beef, cooked rice, diced onion, minced garlic, egg, paprika, salt, and pepper should all be combined in a big bowl. Until all of the ingredients are combined equally, thoroughly mix.
Put the Cabbage Rolls Together:
- Place a leaf of cabbage on a level surface. Spoon about 1/4 cup of the rice and meat mixture into the leaf’s middle. Tuck in the ends as you wrap it up tightly, folding in the sides. Continue with the remaining contents and cabbage leaves.
Get the tomato sauce ready.
- Mix the tomato sauce, sugar, Worcestershire sauce, chopped tomatoes, tomato paste, basil, salt, pepper, and beef broth in a bowl. Mix thoroughly by stirring.
Cook the rolls of cabbage:
- Set the oven’s temperature to 175°C/350°F. Transfer the tomato sauce in a thin layer to a large baking dish.
- The cabbage rolls should be placed in the baking dish seam-side down. Once the rolls are completely covered, pour the remaining tomato sauce over them.
- Bake the dish for one hour while it is covered with aluminum foil. To allow the sauce to thicken, bake for a further 10 to 15 minutes after removing the foil after an hour.
Serve:
- Before serving, let the cabbage rolls to cool for a few minutes. Top them with more sauce and serve with a side salad or crusty bread.
Advice:
- Rolls made with cabbage freeze nicely! Before baking, add the sauce and assemble them without it, then freeze them in an airtight container.
- Enhance Flavor: You can brown the beef a little bit before combining it with the other filling ingredients for a deeper, more flavorful dish.
