My First Batch of Beef Pasties
Components:
Regarding the Pastry:
- 2 and a half cups all-purpose flour
- One teaspoon of salt
- One cup of cold, diced unsalted butter
- Six to eight tablespoons of cold water
Regarding the Filling:
- One pound of ground beef
- One medium onion, cut finely
- one medium-sized peeled and sliced potato
- One carrot, chopped and peeled
- One tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- To taste, add salt and pepper.
- One teaspoon of dried thyme, optional
To Assemble:
- One egg for the egg wash
Guidelines:
Prepare the Pastry:
- Mix the flour and salt together in a big bowl.
- When the mixture resembles coarse crumbs, add the cooled butter and continue to stir.
- One spoonful at a time, gradually add cold water and mix until the dough comes together.
- After dividing the dough into two discs, cover them with plastic wrap and chill them for at least half an hour.
Get the Filling Ready:
- The ground beef should be cooked in a skillet over medium heat. Eliminate extra fat.
- To the skillet, add the diced potato, carrot, and onion. Simmer the veggies for 5 to 7 minutes, or until they are soft.
- Add the Worcestershire sauce and, if using, the thyme after seasoning with salt and pepper. Allow it to cool a little.
Put the Pasties Together:
- Set oven temperature to 400°F, or 200°C.
- On a lightly floured board, roll out one pastry disc to a thickness of about 1/8 inch. Cut into rounds with a diameter of roughly 6 to 8 inches.
- Place a heaping scoop of filling onto each circle’s lower half.
- To form a pocket, fold the remaining half over, then crimp the sides to shut.
- Continue with the remaining filling and pastry.
Prepare the Pasties:
- Transfer the pasties to a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.
- For a golden finish, beat the egg and brush it over the pasties’ tops.
- Bake for twenty to thirty minutes, or until well-browned.
Serve:
- Before serving, allow the pasties to cool for a few minutes. Warm them up and enjoy!
Advice:
- You can add additional veggies or seasonings to the filling to make it your own.
- Accompany the dish with your preferred dipping sauce or a serving of gravy.
