The Distinction Between Au Gratin and Scalloped Potatoes
In summary, the cheese is everything. Potatoes cut thinly and either cream or milk are used in both baked potato recipes. However, the shredded cheese on top and in between the layers of au gratin potatoes creates a delicious crust that bakes while the dish bakes. Traditionally, scalloped potatoes are served without cheese. Therefore, it’s okay if you want to refer to this delectable side dish as “cheesy scalloped potatoes.”

NOTES:

Brands and models may differ in their cooking times.
For a cheesier meal, add extra cheese.
